Music You Love to Listen to but not Play to

I grew up listening to Motown and the Beatles on AM radio (and my parents jazz/vocal record collection of course. [img]biggrin.gif[/img] ). Later, when pop music started showing up on FM radio I was into rock like Steppenwolf, Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Zeppelin, BS&T, Chicago, etc. BTW, I wasn't playing the drums at that time.

To this day, I still love to listen to that music but, I've never really liked playing to it. It just seems so ponderous and laborious to play to compared to the swing, bop, big band, funk, latin stuff I like to play to.

And the funny thing is, I don't necessarily like to listen to the all the stuff I enjoy playing.

Anyone with similar experiences?

Dream Theater... i love listening, but playing to it makes me feel like sh*t... i feel all stiff and silly. But, i like listening to it [img]smile.gif[/img]

Hmm thats interesting Henry...just off the top of my head now thinking about it, all music that i like listening to and excites me i feel like playing along to aswell....if i think of an example of what you say i will edit!!

Very interesting though! Something to think about for the next few days!

Perfect example, a couple of nights ago there was a PBS special (probably a repeat from a few years ago) with surviving members of some great bands from the 60's and 70's playing their old stuff, like Roger McGinn, the lead singer for the Byrds, singing some old Byrds hits, Chuck Negron from 3 Dog Night (great rock singer) singing old 3DN hits. As much as I enjoy listening to the music, it doesn't do much for me to play it.

Yes that's occasionally true.

Country, for one.

I'll play the hell out of it, but i "ain't much up" on listening to most of it.

Also:

Dream Theater... i can play to it; but listening to some of it makes me feel like sh*t... i feel all stiff and silly [or occasionally out of meter]. But, i'll play along to it.
